Social protest in Latin America: analysis from divergence as a category of the criminology of the Global South
Abstract
Social divergence is a category of Southern criminology and aims to provide an interpretation of social and/or collective actions in a descriptive manner. In this way, it establishes an objective reading outside of value judgments in relation to criminal acts, moving away from concepts such as deviation or criminalization. Based on these premises, this article reflects from the perspective of divergence in the cases of social protest in Latin America, particularly focusing on the experiences of Chile and Colombia between 2019 and 2021. The result shows that there are a great variety of facts that make the analysis pertinent from this category, especially in relation to collective action. It is concluded that the contribution of the concept manages to accentuate the interpretation of conflicts outside of criminal interference.
